Our basics of Teaching and Treating Oral Health Care

SIX YEAR MOLAR FOCUS

Six-Year Molar Focus Prevention is Teethsavers’ unique innovation. Six-Year Molars are the first permanent teeth coming in the child’s mouth at about age six often mistaken for a milk tooth. They are the cornerstones of the bite, our largest teeth which do 65 to 70% of adult chewing. Loss of one or more can affect the digestive system which may affect health and longevity.

We only teach two items to mostly illiterate mothers and children just learning English: 1) Six-Year Molars, where to find? (behind the baby molars). 2) How to clean? (brush 8 times back and forth – straight and flat – before bed) automatically cleans the two baby teeth in front and their replacements about age 12 and the 12 year molar. This simple and easy to remember oral health instruction can be added to in insuing years. Rigorous gum brushing is also taught. Dental plaque forms on every one's teeth and can cause tooth decay and periodontal disease. If plaque is properly cleaned (disorganized) it takes about 24 hours to reorganize again causing tooth decay and periodontal disease. Periodic reinforcement is essential.

Teethsavers History

What became Teethsavers began on a church mission to Belize in March of 2000. After working with the Minister of Health to develop an oral health plan for their schools. Dr. Rudd began looking for other developing countries to apply oral health care. He left Lubbock, Texas May of 2000 with two large duffel bags of dental supplies, knowledge of a filling for teeth without electricity and the hope of doing God's will by stepping out of his comfort zone trusting God. Less than 2% of contributions are spent on fund raising or administration. We have a host of volunteers and in kind donations. After one year in the Gambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Serra Leone, Ethiopia, Mongolia, Bangladesh, Nepal and Zambia where he has settled up to the present date.

I went to teach in nine countries in Africa and Asia, with varying success and I learned much every day. Five months in Zambia (population 10.2 million) the past year, I taught one-on-one Six Year Molar Focus and ART to all 168 Dental Therapists and Dentists working for the government. Six Year Molar Focus and ART are the least expensive and most time efficient way to approach this health crisis

In the developing countries we are targeting, the ratio of dental personnel is 50 to 100 times less than that of developed countries. In Zambia, the Chief Dental Officer estimates that 96% of their dental procedures are pain, infection and extractions, of which 80% are Six Year MolarsMuch more learning occurred in the five months at 65,000 population,(316 square miles) Meheba Refugee Settlement in Zambia. Teethsavers employed five recent Dental Therapy graduates and eight refugee dental assistants. In Meheba we screened almost 20,000 children. We treated about half of them with some 16,000 ART fillings and sealants.

One half of these children do not go to school and were taught and treated in their areas. 35,000 toothbrushes with demonstration, supervision and follow up were were given with Six Year Molar Focus instructions. Mehebas five primary schools, grade one to nine, were virtually cavity and oral disease free with pupils from each grade in an active Dental Club.
