The Six-Year Molar Focus School: is designed to educate young people in developing countries who can then care for and educate
their own people. Graduates receive a Certificate “Community Oral Health Educator (COHE) and Atraumatic Restorative
Treatment (ART) Technologist”.
The Zambia school was approved by, and its graduates registered by, Medical Council of Zambia, just as a medical doctor or
dentist, and have reciprocating registration with the eight countries bordering Zambia.
The school opened March of 2003 and had a capacity of 10 each year and cost is $2,200 per student. In our 4th intake of July
2006, we had two students from both Malawi and Angola who will practice in their home country.
The curriculum, developed in collaboration with Dr. Pshane Mtolo, DDS, MPH, Chief Dental Officer of Zambia, includes basic
dental anatomy, prevention, ART techniques, basic periodontal disease treatment and identification of soft tissue abnormalities,
some life threatening, such as noma, needing medical referral, cross-infection control, what to refer and basic human development.
Students live in our rented schoolhouse and are provided their needs.
Our admission policy is The Key to sustaining our simple program. We have and can make human errors in selections of students.
Other than a grade 12 certificate, we require proficient English, the language they will teach in and observe our team at
least four days. Following the observation, graduates and Dr. Rudd select those becoming paid dental assistants for three
months for opportunity for final selection as students.
Admission is based on their ability to learn, follow instructions and compassion to serve children as Teethsavers is compassion
based and most important trust ability for sustainability.
The Zambia school opened from 2003 through 2006 and was closed due to a lack of cooperation.
